Post BMG Guys Flouting the No Text/No Internet Phone Rule

So I'm pretty sure that BMG has a rule that all unmarried guys are not allowed to have text/internet on their phone. What does it mean when a guy has text/internet? Is he flouting authority and has no regard for daas torah, or is this the kind of rule that no one keeps?

Well if he has internet I would get nervous. If it was just texting would ask him straight out "isn't there a rule you can't have texting?" I don't think it's necessarily a red flag. But I do think it means that it probably means he doesn't listen to everything his Rabbeim tell him. But I don't think that's necessarily such a bad thing.

A quick google search shows they did make such a rule. I suppose you should find out if the guys generally follow it. If they don't; I'd say no biggie if he doesn't.

Yea, ask anyone in BMG what most guys do and take it from there. I also think that whether he listens to the rule or not shows what type of guy he is..not in a bad way but the guy who chooses not to have it is for sure the type of person who listens to rules..just a personality thing. Also I think they need to sign their name that their not going to have it before being admitted in Yeshiva..I think that may be a new rule so you need to check that out too.

yup it's true about the 'signing thing'... & I'd say 2 things on it:
a) If he needs internet and text, he should be elsewhere not in BMG... and
b) If he can't keep to an agreement that he signed, I'd be questioning his other ethics and morals...

Agreed...on your second point. Your first point, well, be realistic. BMG is a major mix. Many guys are only there either for the name or because it's a good "train station." There are guys there that sit in their dorms and watch movies all day. The fact that a guy goes to BMG means absolutely nothing about his learning or yiras shamyim, just saying.

it depends. are you questioning if hes a liar and does not obey his rebbeim or if he texts and uses the internet.
2 different issues here.
if it is a rule and he does not keep to it then he is diregarding daas torah no matter what other boys are doing.

The latter. Texting and internet is a whole different parsha. It's mostly about flouting daas torah.

Is he flouting authority and has no regard for daas torah, or is this the kind of rule that no one keeps?

I heard (from a reliable source) that a lot of boys have internet on their phones in BMG. Whether this means that everyone does or they're just boys who don't care about following the rules, I don't know. Hope this helps.

These Types of guys that are there only for the name; eventually ruin their name, since they can't live up to the standards that are expected. Rather they should be in a more modern yeshiva- which will preserve their name. B/c it suits their hashkafic views instead of pretending to be Sth they are not. BMG is doing a massive disservice not only to the institution but to the guys themselves by keeping them there.

It means that he's a Jewish guy living in the BMG dormitories. He may be learning he may not. And who knows what else he's doing...

he has no reason to use it , no matter what he's using it for.. unless he got a hetter from a rav.. otherwise it's a big fat ugly red flag!

So I asked my bro in law what it means if someone in BMG has texting. He answered what does it mean if a girl's skirt isn't four inched below her knees? LOL I thought it was a good comparison what do you think?

Um, not really. If a yeshiva has a rule and they ask you to sign that you're keeping this rule, and you do, but you don't keep the rule, it isn't the same as not keeping a chumra...

However, that being said, there are certain rules that no one keeps. So the question was, is this one of them? Even if so, I think it definitely says something about a guy's honesty and regard for daas torah.

Well, as for regards for whether they are Machshiv Daas Torah I think it is a good comparison, I have heard quite a few Rabbanim/Rebbetzins speak about the 4 inches and they did not make it sound like a chumra. Also are you sure they had to sign something? How would they get the boys already there to sign? Maybe just the new boys had to sign? It might be something worth looking into before you make a decision based on this.

Of course you can't make a decision based on one random fact. Also, if something is an issue (or could become one) then you definitely should talk to the guy about it. (I have had this specific discussion about texting/internet with more than one guy. Each time though I get a different perspective on the matter.) Either way, open and honest communication is always important.

Just trolling for people's opinions here.

Ha that's a good one!!! Thanks Shaindy!

I went out with a boy who had text on his cell phone. When I asked him about it he said he crossed it out before he signed 😀 .
