Suppose a boy was perfect for you in every way. However, he had one meshugas - he owns a dangerous pet (think scorpion, tarantula, viper)
He refuses to have it devenomed. He insists it is perfectly safe, well trained, clean, and you won't have anything to do with taking care of it.

What would influence your decision?

They seem like a fun pet to have. I don't think you can bond emotionally with them like you can with a dog or cat, but seems much more fun to play with than a bird.

And probably would help get over fear of insects.

Anything that bothered me would be a factor.
Also, if it bothered me so much and that didn't mean anything to him, that would certainly bother me.
But if he wanted it so much, that would matter to me also. (does anyone really need a tarantula that bad?)

Good point.
In theory, I'm all for getting over one's phobias. It even sounds kind of courageous, to own a pet he is scared of.

On the other hand, maybe that's a good trade-off. In exchange for his keeping such a creature, and getting over his phobia, he'd have to agree to always forever get rid of all other bugs and animals, and not expect me to ever deal with them.

But every AM, I'd be checking that cage to make sure the animal was still inside.

I would just put him in the cage with it.

Creative idea. That would definitely give him an opportunity to prove he was over the phobia.

But, that may not be the best thing for your relationship in the long term. I can't imagine he'd feel very good about being forced to kill his pet or get bitten afterwards.

I mean, we are talking about someone who wants a tarantula. Hard to know what will make him feel good or not...

Yes, but we're talking about someone whom one would ostensibly consider marrying. People want to smoke. Is that worse than wanting a tarantula? I think it is.

As long as you don't put Patcha's husband in the cage. 😉

But seriously, the more I think about it, the more I want a tarantula. I'm going to have to convince my mother.

You're right. What kind of person would marry someone who wanted a tarantula? And it's all your fault for suggesting this. Now I have to be careful to not mention this on dates. Thankfully my shadchanim don't read this site.

She didn't put me in a cage, but she thought it was a joke.

My sister, on the other hand, informed me that if I have a pet tarantula, she won't babysit my kids. Empty threats. She'll learn to love my tarantula.

Marrying a guy with a dangerous pet/hobby is one thing. Having kids with above mentioned guy? Never.

If it's dead.

I think (and hope) that having kids comes along with marrying.

Do you value your personal safety below that of your children?

His wife said that the only thing better than a dangerous pet, is a dangerous pet that flies. She's really his zivug hagun.
